SKELLIGS

The Skellig islands - Skellig Michael and the Little Skellig - lie 12km off the Kerry Coast.

Skellig Michael is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It contains the ruins of a monastic settlement that was founded in the 7th Century and continued as an important ecclesiastical centre for 600 years.

Visitors are allowed on Skellig Michael during the summer season. Boats leave Portmagee near Cahersiveen at around 10:15am and it takes about an hour to reach the island. I travel with Skipper Pat Murphy and he can be contacted at 087 2342168. It is important to pre-book a day or so beforehand.

Be warned: the sea crossing can be very rough so if you are not a good sailor it might be best to avoid the trip unless the conditions are very calm.

Also: a reasonable degree of fitness and a head for heights is required. The steps to the top of the rock are very steep and unfortunately two people have died there in the last couple of years.

This is a collection of photos from the last three years.
